August 6 2008: An Orgy of Noise

I played the new Sonic Youth disc this week. My review in a snapshot: Pretty damn good. I'm split on the SYR noise recording, finding a bunch of them tests of patience more than anything, and others trying to be more ambitious, standing on their own. SYR8: Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth (Danish for The Other Side of Sonic Youth) is one of the latter. It's a set from the 2005 Rokslide Festival in Denmark. The set begins with Kim Gordon and Steve Shelley. Gordon moaning some oblique lyrics into the microphone while scraping her guitar, Shelley moving in and out of the spotlight with drum fills. Eventually Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo enter, producing an excellent example of the quartet's ability to mesh with each other's chaos while maintaining their individual styles. In this, they are unmatched. Jim O'Rourke eventually comes on stage, proving that his presence in the band was far more than that of an extra musician, that he was a full fledged experimentalist. The set continues to peak when (I don't remember what time exactly) Mats Gustafsson enters, blasting through the noise and taking an appropriate place in the mix with his reeds and horns. Finally, Merzbow himself comes on stage with dual laptops and proceeds to add, help direct, and push the set into new directions. Then they all leave stage one by one in order of appearance, Gordon and Shelley leaving first until Merzbow is the only participant left on stage.

I wish they put a DVD of this set out. It's fucking awesome. Check it out if you can stand the noise. If you're reading this, there's a chance you can't as I witnessed my listening audience dwindle while the Sonic Youth piece moved forward. But hey, Pitchfork liked it.

July 23 2008: Stormy High

This is the show where I reported about the goings-on in New York the previous weekend (Teddy Rockstar, Siren, and the Fuck Buttons/Liars show at McCarren pool). To sum it up, Ted Leo was great, Beach House floored two of my friends (and myself), I like the Annuals set, Times New Viking were pretty good, Jaguar Love sucked, and Broken Social Scene wasn't bad. Fuck Buttons were real cool. It was good to know the Thurston Moore school of Playskool toys as instruments isn't dead. Finally, Liars blew me away. I was never the biggest fan of them, I first heard them in their dance-punk days of the early '00s, when I was fervently opposed to the notion of dance-punk. Needless to say, someone should have told me the switched over to experimental rock. I feel left out. At the end of the show I considered myself a fan.

July 16 2008: I Hear the Siren(s)

Took a little while to get back on track, but here's the playlist from a couple weeks ago. This was the prelude to my trip to New York, and featured artists that were playing at the Siren Music Fest on Coney Island and of course, Theo Leo, who I was lucky enough to catch in Battery Park on the 17th. I unfortunately didn't get a chance to see These Are Powers at Siren, or A Place to Bury Strangers at the after party, but I thoroughly enjoyed the bands I did see (except for Jaguar Love, they sucked). I also had an extra 10-15 minutes on the air because Doc was stuck in traffic. If I remember correctly, I just sort of filled it with a ten minute War on Drugs song.

I like to think Andy Warhol is somewhere, and he's laughing so hard that Campbell's Tomato Soup is coming out of his nose.

I should mention that yesterday, I engineered and spun music in the studio while Cold DJ Rigorous was at Real Art Ways in Hartford, interviewing artists, community members and the director of the place about stuff. I would play music between the interviews. Aside from a few small snafus, it went pretty smoothly. I don't know if he has a website, blog, myspace, etc etc to that I could link to, but I know Mr. Cold will be editing down his interviews into a couple public affairs segments to air on WHUS.

Not a whole lot to report on. I got word of a promotional ticket give-away, so I tried to help the promotions director out and get rid of the tickets. I was 1/2. I might have failed in class, but the batting average is fucking good. Only had to rely on two or three of my "go-to" artists, which I guess is pretty good. Plus, I think I did a pretty good job managing the flow of dynamics in respect to the whole show.

Starting from Scratch...

Well, not quite but almost. Matt Little and I recently switched time slots. So, in honor of my departure from Monday nights, and my arrival on the Wednesday night airwaves, I'm not only going to try to update regularly (possibly with more than just playlists) but throw in some old ones too. So, look up on this page, or look down, I really don't know hot Blogger works, to find some recent stuff. I know I promised old playlists and all that shit in my last couple posts, but at this point most of them have been lost/destroyed/misplaced/sucked into a light fixture that leads to another dimension inhabited by bright blues and reds. Part of my reluctance to maintain the page was due to the volume of shows I was doing, or, in other words, didn't feel like upating. If I find them, I might post some of them. Really, if you want to know what I was playing there wasn't anything too, too exciting there. A lot of the new Dirtbombs album, a lot of the new Beach House album, the Black Hollies were also a mainstay, as well as Portishead. I do have stuff from ranging from late April to now-ish. I'll probably throw some of those in.
